If one were to look up Houston Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney on Twitter, they’d probably presume he’s a member of the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins, or any team needing help on the defensive line.
As Clowney trade rumors run rampant due to him staying out of training camp after a failure to reach a long-term deal on the franchise tag, Fox Sports analyst Rob Parker offers a new destination for the edge rusher: the Cleveland Browns.
On “Undisputed,” Parker said:
“I know most people don’t want to go to Cleveland, but when you talk about the Browns and the big names that have come — when you pickup OBJ [Odell Beckham Jr.] and what not — but Clowney, to me, maybe he should windup in Cleveland. He’s another guy, quality star name, and he could play alongside Myles Garrett, right? So, I would say Cleveland [as a trade destination], why not?”
As enticing as a Clowney-Garrett pairing sounds, there are few road bumps into making a trade for the three-time Pro Bowler.
First: he hasn’t signed his franchise tag, meaning he essentially has a no-trade clause and can pick where he chooses.
Second: Houston probably won’t trade one of their best players to a competitor in the same conference.
Third: Cleveland will have to pay big deals to some of their stars in the near future. If Clowney were to be a Brown, he’d be one of them, as he’s on a one-year deal and should get a massive contract offer in 2020 if he plays up to expectations.
Fourth: Olivier Vernon exists. The Browns traded for the well-paid, 2018 Pro Bowl edge rusher and he expects to be a big part of what they do. With Clowney onboard, he may be on the bench.
Cleveland isn’t a likely destination for Clowney, but it’s in the realm of possibility — as is every team. Cleveland has the cap space ($35 million, per Over The Cap) to acquire his nearly $15 million deal. But a lot more moving parts would have to happen, including Clowney wanting to go to Cleveland.
