The Green Bay Packers have tried to put an emphasis on shoring up the supporting cast of quarterback Aaron Rodgers in recent years. It seems the emergence of tight end Robert Tonyan has been one of the more pleasant surprised for Rodgers this offseason.
Tonyan has made quite the impression on the Packers star during training camp. Rodgers showered the third-year tight end with praise during an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio, via Zach Kruse of the Packers Wire.
“He is a sponge,” Rodgers said on Tuesday. “I think every great player that has ever played in this league and has not been given everything right away or been a starter since Day 1, they’ve been like Robert. Just soaking up everything you can from the veterans in the locker room. And he’s been fortunate the last couple of years. He’s had Jimmy Graham, Marcedes Lewis and Lance Kendricks in the room. He’s just been a great teammate and a great pro. He’s the kind of guy you don’t have to worry about.”
Tonyan began his college career at Indiana State as a quarterback before switching to wide receiver his sophomore year. He then decided to convert to tight end in the NFL and is still in the midst of making the full transition to his new spot. Regardless, it is clear that his versatile skill set has left quite the impression on Rodgers.
This is hardly the first time he has been complimentary of Tonyan’s approach as a football player. Having the approval of a player of Rodgers’ caliber will certainly go a long way when it comes to etching out a potential role for himself on offense in the 2019 NFL season. For now, he is focused on taking advantage of the opportunity to learn from established tight ends such as Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis.
