Bobby Portis is looking forward to playing for New York Knicks head coach David Fizdale next season.
Portis says the Knicks head coach is built the same way he is: a passionate and fierce competitor.
“Since my interview process, he’ll text me everyday,” Portis told Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson of Heavy. “He’s a fierce coach, one of the best vocal coaches there is.”
Bobby Portis split time with the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards last season. He signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Knicks in free agency this summer.
Portis averaged 14.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 50 games in 2018-19 while shooting 44.4 percent from the field, 39.3 percent from beyond the arc and 79.4 percent from the free-throw line.
David Fizdale won just 17 games in his first season with the Knicks, but the 45-year-old will have more talent to work with next season. After missing out on stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving this summer, New York used its cap space on Portis, Julius Randle, Taj Gibson, Marcus Morris, Wayne Ellington, Elfrid Payton and Reggie Bullock.
Those veteran players will try and help Dennis Smith Jr., Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson and rookie RJ Barrett develop the right way in 2019-20. Fizdale is hoping his new roster leads to more wins for the Knicks.
