Letter: Is ignoring visa overstays racist?

Visa overstays receive
little attention in media

An issue that receives almost no public attention is that it is estimated that in recent years about 40-50% of undocumented immigrants are those who have overstayed their visas rather than those who crossed the southern border illegally. This inattention shows that the anti-immigrant stance at large in this country is largely racist.

Also, there is the ridiculous right-wing claim that we are in a crisis situation along our southern border because of a lack of border security. Actually, border apprehension declined 76% between 2000 and 2018 at the same time that the number of border agents increased from 8,500 in 2000 to 19,437 in 2018. During this same time frame, technological improvements in border security also increased significantly. We have in fact been experiencing a lessening of the “crisis situation.”
