Former Melrose great Shannon Kirwan takes over as girls hoop coach at Masconomet

Masconomet Regional High School has named Shannon Kirwan as its next girls’ varsity basketball coach.

Kirwan was a Boston Herald Dream Team selection while at Melrose High School. She earned two-time league MVP honors and is the second all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,313 points as her teams compiled a 91-6. record. Kirwan was also named the 2003 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year and was inducted into the Melrose HS Hall of Fame in 2011.

Kirwan went on to have an outstanding college career at Bentley College, under the direction of coaching legend Barbara Stevens. She is one of only seven players in Bentley history with over 1,000 career points and 500 career assists while helping lead her teams to multiple Sweet 16 appearances in the Division 2 NCAA Tournament.

As a coach, Kirwan was part of the 2007 staff and team that was inducted into the Suffolk University Hall of Fame in 2017. She was also the associate head coach at Lesley University in 2009-10, the head coach of the North Shore Blizzard from 2011-2017 and an assistant coach at the Winsor School from 2015-2018, where
she is currently employed as the registrar of the school.
