Fire crews battle Merrill Fire in Moraga

MORAGA — Fire crews were at the scene of a fast-growing vegetation fire, authorities said early Thursday.

Shortly before 1 a.m., Moraga-Orinda Fire Department firefighters responded to Merrill Circle North at Mulholland for a report of a half-acre fire on a steep slope with a moderate rate of spread.

Soon after, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection resources responded to the area and tweeted that it was at 8 acres with 0 percent containment.

At least one other observer described rapid spread and erratic behavior, with Moraga police and other public-safety crews working to coordinate possible evacuations possibly hampered by the ongoing public-safety power shutoff.
