(CNN) — A young girl suffered a medical emergency and died on a flight Thursday evening out of Los Angeles International Airport.
She was identified as 10-year-old Janice Xu, according to Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy will be performed, Smith told CNN; he declined to provide more information before its completion.
News station KTLA reported that the girl suffered a cardiac arrest on the plane.
Delta 2423 had taken off at 5:30 p.m. en route to Seattle. FlightAware logs show that, barely 15 minutes into the flight, the plane turned around over Santa Barbara and headed back to Los Angeles.
It landed at LAX at 6:07 p.m. and was met by paramedics.
“LAFD paramedics responded to a medical aid for a minor female child and furiously worked to save her life. Sadly, all efforts were futile and the child was beyond medical help,” the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.
Los Angeles police officers also responded and determined there was no foul play involved. They are not investigating the incident further, officer Mike Lopez said.
The flight departed again for Seattle around midnight, and reached its destination shortly before 3 a.m.
