NORTHRIDGE – Points weren’t easy to come by when No. 2 Harvard-Westlake and No. 4 Santa Clarita Christian Clarita clashed Friday night in Heritage Christian’s Holiday Showcase.

Harvard-Westlake point guard Spencer Hubbard provided the pivotal spark down the stretch that guided the Wolverines to a 57-49 victory over the Cardinals by scoring eight of his 13 team-high points in the fourth quarter. Responsible for six straight points coming in the final two minutes.

“Even when the game is close, we always try and stick to the game plan,” Hubbard said.

A deep three from Cameron Thrower gave Harvard-Westlake a 49-45 lead with 2:39 left in the game, before Hubbard scored on a dazzling finish between two defenders then split the defense before dropping off a no-look pass to Truman Gettings on the next possession. Hubbard then laid in a wide-open breakaway layup to ice the game.

“Spencer is the best point guard I’ve ever played with,” senior Mason Hooks said.

Hubbard received word that he was accepted to his dream school Duke last Thursday. No indication if that’s where he’ll end up for certain, but as Harvard-Westlake heads into the Christmas break 12-0 he sees the hard work paying off.

“It was a big milestone of mine to get into Duke,” Hubbard said. “But I have a lot more to accomplish and I want to keep working.”
